It is high time the Indian society readies itself to accept and embrace certain things. Words like ‘sex’ and ‘condoms’ leave us tongue-tied and red in the face. What are we so embarrassed about? Something as natural as menstruation is such a taboo in our society that not only men, but even women avoid talking about it. You may still find a handful of people talking aloud about ‘sex’, but ‘periods’, no way.
Here’s a video out of a recent press conference wherein a journalist interviews Parineeti Chopra on ‘periods’, ignorantly referring to it as ‘women problems’. That one word defines the Indian mindset – problem. But the strong and confident woman that she is, Parineeti Chopra tackles the situation just as any girl should. First, she makes the journalist repeat the question, till he overcomes his inhibitions and says the word ‘periods’ – lesson #1. “You have to talk about it. You can’t be shy” she says. Then, she disses him for thinking of menstruation as a ‘problem’ and goes on to point out how ignorant the typical Indian man is.
She reiterates the fact that not only should men not feel ‘ashamed’ of their sisters, wives and mothers go through the menstruation cycle, they should know everything about it as adults. Also, there is nothing unhealthy or shameful about a woman getting her periods. In fact, it is healthy and as natural as anything else in the world. Like she says in the video, “men really need to relax!”
