Jolla phone launches in India, available exclusively via Snapdeal for Rs.16,499

As it promised back in July, Jolla has now launched its smartphone in India, in an exclusive distribution arrangement with online retailer

Jolla, as you may recall, was created by former Nokia employees, who developed a spiritual successor, of sorts, to the MeeGo-powered Nokia N9, which was mothballed by the company when it switched to Windows Phone back in 2010. Jolla makes no secret of this; indeed, in its press release today, it prominently noted that its efforts are "based on the heritage of Nokia and MeeGo", adding that its device "offers a distinct user experience, unlike any of the competition."

Key specs of the Jolla Phone include:

  • 4.5-inch qHD (960x540px) IPS LCD with Gorilla Glass 2
  • Dual-core 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 (8930AA) Krait 300 CPU with Adreno 305 GPU
  • 1GB RAM
  • 16GB onboard storage (plus microSD support up to 64GB)
  • 8MP rear camera with LED flash
  • 2MP front-facing camera
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • 131 x 68 x 9.9mm, 141g
  • 4G LTE support (800 / 1800 / 2600Mhz; bands 3/7/20)'s Tony Navin said today that "this is one smartphone that a lot of people in India have been waiting for and we are glad to be exclusively launching Jolla in India." The device is available to buy now for Rs.16,499 INR (roughly $270 USD).

Jolla has been gradually expanding availability of its device in more markets - although it's still a long, long way from being the third mobile ecosystem, despite the confident insistence of the company's chairman Antti Saarnio last month that it has already achieved that goal.
