Mahindra launches all-new Scorpio

Mahindra has launched the new generation Scorpio that has been built on a completely new platform. The new SUV boasts aggressive styling, brand new interiors and advanced technologies keeping with current market trends tocarry on the legacy of the car that defines the marque.

The new Scorpio is undoubtedly a head turner, however the real story lies under its skin, namely the all new chassis which will also be utilized on future models from the company. The new chassis is made up of five sections that allows the engineers to either extend or reduce the overall length in order to suit various applications. It is a tougher chassis that offers greater rigidity thus directly impacting the ride and handling characteristics of the vehicle. For the new Scorpio the set-up also includes a wider front and rear track, a different front and rear suspension set up, polyurethane bump stops, a vibration damper on the propeller shaft, banjo housing for the differential and a larger plastic fuel tank.

Other major changes to the vehicle include a brand new front look, larger 17 inch alloy wheels, new rear styling including LED taillights, a brand new dashboard design, new steering wheel, new center console and new a/c vents. The vehicle itself is a vast improvement over the previous generation model and now comes across as a refined product with all the niggles that plagued the previous generation versions sorted out. Mahindra has however retained the 2.2 litre mHawk engine that churns out 119.6 PS @ 4000 rpm and generates a maximum torque of 280Nm between 1800 – 2800 rpm, however the gearbox has been upgraded in order to offer smoother shifts.

Speaking at the launch, Anand Mahindra, chairman, Mahindra Group, said, "The Scorpio was a tremendous leap of faith for us when it was launched 12 years ago, establishing the foundations for the development of an entirely new generation of vehicles from Mahindra. More importantly, it helped transform the Mahindra brand, giving it a sophisticated urban edge at a time when we were primarily thought of as a rural player. This new generation Scorpio will deliver exceptional value while offering accessible technology to our customers across India."

The Scorpio was first launched in June 2002. It marked a momentous moment for Mahindra as it went on to transform the brand's urban image. In the last 12 years the Scorpio has sold over 4.5 lakh units and has managed to clock the sales of 50,000 year-on-year in the last three years. With the new generation model the company is rather bullish about the prospects and are looking at bettering their yearly numbers. Considering the fact that the new Scorpio has been priced rather aggressively between Rs. 7.98 - 11.46 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai), it surely looks like an achievable target.

The new generation Scorpio will be available in seven different variants and customers will get to choose between multiple seating configurations to suit their individual needs. The SUV will be available in rear wheel drive and four wheel drive configurations as well. In a market that is more SUV centric, for this brand to hold its own, such a move was inevitable.
