Infosys Employee Freed From Sydney Cafe

SYDNEY:  Viswakanth Ankireddy, the Infosys employee who was held hostage along with an unknown number of people at a cafe in Sydney, was freed today as the police stormed the building to end the siege.

Viswakanth is a resident of Guntur in Andhra Pradesh.

His father had said earlier today that he had received a call from Infosys, after which he called their daughter-in-law, who reportedly said the hostages had been allowed to take lunch.

"The Australian police assured me that everything will be fine and there is nothing to worry," Mr Reddi said.

An armed man held several people hostage for nearly 17 hours at the cafe at Martin's Place, a major shopping and pedestrian thoroughfare near the Sydney Opera House in the central business district of the city.

The gunman has been identified as an Iranian refugee who has been charged with sexual assault.
