The people of the district, who were rejoicing over the fact that an international airport would be coming up at Bhogapuram, had more reason to be happy as Naval Armament Depot (NAD) might also come up in the district.
According to sources, the officials of the Indian Navy had sent a proposal to the Central government seeking expansion of armament depot and requested for allotment of land near coast in north Andhra. In the wake of this development, Dattirajeru mandal in the district is touted to house the new Naval Armament Depot (NAD). It should be noted that Indian Navy has an armament depot at Vizag, apart from several other naval establishments like INS Dega and others. In a bid to strengthen the coast, the officials of Indian Navy are keen to add another NAD to their ranks. It has been reliably learnt that as much as 2,500 acres of land was identified in Dattirajeru mandal. Recently, the authorities of Indian Navy have visited the lands in Komatipalli, V Krishnapuram, Gutchimi, S Chintalavasa in the mandal. A senior revenue officer under the condition of anonymity told The Hans India that they have received proposals from Indian Navy seeking land to set up NAD.
However, only 90 acres of land in the region is under government and the rest has to be purchased from the farmers. According to rough estimates taking into consideration the market price, the naval authorities have to pay Rs 80 core to buy the required land from the farmers. But, as per the new norms they need to pay three times more to the market value as compensation.
