A week after Navjot Singh Sidhu floated his own political outfit, another cricketer Praveen Kumar has become a politician. The man from Meerut, who last played for India in 2012, met the Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav and joined the Samajwadi party. “The decision was not taken in haste, I was thinking about it for a long now. I really liked Akhilesh ji and his ideas. Ek dum mast aadmi hai woh. I wanted to contribute in progress of society and Uttar Pradesh so I just went ahead and join SP," Kumar told The Indian Express.
Praveen has been out of the Indian team for quite sometime now but continues to star in the IPL, playing a vital role for Sunrises Hyderabad. The assembly election in UP is scheduled to take place next year but Kumar says he isn't thinking about contesting in the election but would rather spend a few years learning how things work in politics.
“At the moment I am not thinking of it (contesting) at all. I still want to represent my country and I have still plenty of cricket left in me. I just joined today as a member of SP. In next few years I want to learn how things function in politics and how I can contribute. There are plenty of issues which are in my mind and at the moment i don't want to talk about it. There are many things I want to do. I have given myself some time and want to work in grass root level now. Contesting election is not in my mind for sure."
