Bhubaneswar leads Smart City race; Pune, Jabalpur, Bhopal among first 20


Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu on Thursday announced the first list of 20 smart cities at a press conference in New Delhi. The minister said that a committee has chosen 20 cities in the first list based on feasibility, smartness of proposal, performance indicators among others and awarded marks out of 100. “We introduced competition to pick the best candidates. The competition was as rigorous as the civil services exam," remarked Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu, announcing the names.

Each smart city will be provided Rs 100 crore every year for five years and Centre is expected to spend around Rs 96,000 crore.

Bhubaneswar has topped the list of 20 smart cities followed by Pune and Jaipur coming second and third. “Today marks a historic landmark in annals of urban development as we get to know the first batch of 'Smart Cities," said Naidu.

4. Surat
5. Kochi
6. NDMC (New Delhi)
7. Ahmedabad
8. Jabalpur
9. Vizag
10. Solapur
11. Davangere
12. Indore
13. Coimbatore
14. Kakinada
15. Belgaum
16. Udaipur
17. Guwahati
18. Chennai
19. Ludhiana
20. Bhopal

Some of the parameters on the basis of which the decision was taken are feasibility, result orientation, citizen participation, smartness of proposals etc.
