The Multi Sports Complex proposed at Gandigundam would become a global attraction for the city, said Vice-Chairman of VUDA T Baburao Naidu while discussing with the well-known architects here on Wednesday. The VUDA has been assigned for preparing designs for the development of the Sports Complex with a stadium and supporting facilities for organising the international, and national sporting events.
An extent of 79 acres has been allocated for the development of the complex. The Vice-Chairman said competitive designs were invited from the architects which should consist unique features addressing all requirements for the conduct of sports events and coaching activities.
Elaborating on all aspects of the proposed complex, the Vice-Chairman said about 32 sports events have been identified which would be held at the complex and the finalisation of design will be done by the Chief Minister. The Chief Minster has proposed to host the forthcoming National Games in Visakhapatnam and for that purpose the Sports Complex is needed to be completed by 2018.
The Vice-Chancellor asked the architects to submit the designs by May 14. He insisted the architects to include the best stadium design, attractive landscaping and green cover, along with proper parking slots both multi-level and underground to meet the future demands. Visakhapatnam West MLA PGVR Naidu (Ganababu) suggested reserving a portion of land for the future development to add new requirements and amenities.
Since the proposed Sports Complex is bigger than the Gachi Bowli Stadium and a landmark to Visakhapatnam, facilities should be of highest standard, he advised. VUDA secretary A Srinivas suggested inclusion of facilities for accommodation, hospitality, sale points for sports material and other needs. VUDA chief urban planner B Ramathirtha, assistant planning officer KD Brainard, district sports officer D Surya Rao, GVMC sports director Y Srinivasa Rao and around 10 architects from Hyderabad and other places attended the meeting.
