The demand to make Vizag a railway zone has been causing an intense political debate since nearly a decade. During the 2014 elections, the railway zone issue was the main trump card for the BJP and YSRCP MP candidates. However, after making many promises, the NDA government, following a special committee's directive, has ruled out the railway zone to Vizag, but is working towards giving it to Vijayawada even though there was never a demand for the railway zone from this region.
Centre's unexpected surprise to Vijayawada has made the local leaders and even the common people angry. Many, including the Left party leaders, have been protesting against BJP's decision and are vehemently saying that they do not want a railway zone for Vijayawada. Incidentally, the reason behind the protests against the railway zone to Vijayawada is that the officials at the South Central Railway divisions in Vijayawada and Guntur have figured out that Vijayawada can't make any steadfast progress in terms of economy while being a railway zone.
Meanwhile, AP CM Nara Chandrababu Naidu has told the centre to respect the demand for the railway zone to Vizag, apart from requesting the protesting opposition parties not to politicize the railway zone issue.
