Former principal of ANU College of Architecture and Planning G. Babu Rao was remanded in 14-day judicial custody on Wednesday, nearly six months after being charged with abetting the suicide of Mondi Rishiteswari, a student of first year B.Arch at the university.
The body of Rishiteswari was found hanging in her room at the ladies' hostel on July 14 afternoon. Police arrested three students— Dumpa Hanisha, Dharavath Jaicharan and Narala Srinivas —on various charges, including Section 306 IPC (abetting suicide).
But the delay in filing charges against Babu Rao, who was accused No. 4 in the case, had invited the wrath of student groups and the civic society. Muralikrishna, father of Rishiteswari, alleged that the former principal had refused to take action against the seniors charged with ragging. Photos and videos of the former principal with the accused at a freshers' party also created ripples.
Finally, the court issued NBW against Babu Rao and the police picked him up from Hyderabad.Babu Rao was produced before the Sixth Additional Munsiff Magistrate who remanded him to judicial custody. He was then lodged in the district jail here.
