Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu met with irrigation department officials on the issue of linking Godavari River with Krishna Delta. Officials informed Naidu on proposal of lift irrigation project to lift (flood) water from Godavari and using them for power generation would cost Rs. 1272 crores and Rs. 258 crores respectively with an additional maintenance charges costing Rs. 26 crores per year. This river linkage would also be beneficial for Rayalaseema to use water for domestic and industrial purposes.
The Chief Minister suggested officials to work on possibility of Krishna-Penna rivers linkage and also explore the possibility of including Buckingham canal. He also asked officials to complete the works of Polavaram main canal before the next cropping season. Naidu is also seeking Central support through its National River linkage project for including these state’s projects. Vamsadhara, Thotapalli, Veligonda, Handrineeva and Gaaleru-Nagari projects are also on top priority.
