A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi ordered an enquiry into the 'Panama papers' leak case in which the names of some Indians have come up, the Indian Express disclosed the second list featuring others who were involved in offshore companies.
The list includes many industrialists and businessmen. The owner of Mehrasons Jewellers Ashwani Kumar Mehra and his family members, industrialists Gautam and Karan Thapar have also been named for being involved with offshore companies in tax havens. Other businessmen like Satish Govind Samtani, Vishlav Bahadur, Harish Mohnani and a retired MP government official Prabhash Sankhla have also been named for having incorporated offshore entities.
Chairman of Pune-based Sava healthcare Vinod Ramchandra Jadhav, Ranjeev Dahuja and Kapil Sain Goel of Bealls International Corporation and agriculture equipments seller Vivek Jain are also named in the list as a director of an offshore company. Meanwhile, the US is also reviewing the leaked 'Panama papers', which lifted the lid on the murky offshore financial dealings of a slew of politicians and celebrities across the world, including 500 from India, and will follow up on alleged corruption linked to it.
"We are aware of the reports and are reviewing them. While we cannot comment on the specifics of these alleged documents, the US Department of Justice takes very seriously all credible allegations of high level, foreign corruption that might have a link to the United States or the US financial system," US Justice Department spokesman Peter Carr said.
Panama Papers exposes the offshore links of some of the world's most prominent people, including 12 current and former world leaders, and reveals how associates of Russian President Vladimir Putin secretly shuffled as much as $2 billion through banks and shadow companies.
