Seven Dalit young men attempted to commit suicide and several buses were set on fire in Gujarat after four Dalit men were stripped and beaten up by self-styled 'Cow Protectors' or Gau Rakshaks, over allegations of cow killing in Una, some 360 Kms away from the capital city. The video of the thrashing had surfaced online last week, causing an outrage on social media, as people outraged about breakdown of law and order. Dalit groups organised protest rallies, where seven men consumed poison in an attempt to commit suicide in seperate rallies.
The issue of the protests and the Dalit thrashings was aggressively pursued in the Parliament on Monday by Uttar Pradesh Dalit leader Mayawati. The outrage also lead to the adjournment of the Upper House on Monday. Protesters attacked public transport, and set at least two buses on fire in Rajkot, while another one was torched in Jamnagar.
According to a report, the protests have spread to the Saurashtra region, wherein lie the seven big cities of the state. A group also blocked a national highway connecting Rajkot with Porbandar, yesterday.
