In a shocking incident, a four days old infant allegedly died of ant bites in old government hospital in Hanumanpet here on Monday. The tragedy comes close on the heels of a similar death of an infant in Government Hospital in Guntur recently reportedly due to attack by the mice.
Lakshmi, mother of the male-child who died on Monday, said she woke up at about 5.40 a.m. only to see her son dead. "His body bore symptoms of ant bites all over. I doubt if he had died of ant bites," she said, suppressing tears in her eyes. The news of the boy's death spread like wild fire in the city, pulling the leaders of all Opposition parties to the hospital where they sat in a dharna for a long time.
The boy's father Anjaiah, who is an auto-driver, is from a village Penukada in Guntur district. When the confinement days of his wife were nearing completion, he, on the advice of his friends, admitted her to the government hospital in Vijayawada hoping for a better medical care.
The parents celebrated the new arrival four days ago but the boy's death came as a shock to them. District Collector G Srujana, who visited the hospital, was non-committal on the cause of the death. "We will know the cause only after a detailed inquiry," she said, adding that inquiry was going on now.
