After winning the elections through the TDP-BJP alliance in Andhra Pradesh, the BJP high command is all set to repeat’s its success mantra in Tamil Nadu. In a move that is being seen as many as well-calculated, BJP chief Amit Shah has shown interest in making Rajinikanth the face of Saffron party in Tamil Nadu. The superstar has himself set the ball rolling for columnists to ponder about the various possibilities that might emerge from the alliance, by saying ‘God’s will is my will’. In a state where there is a two-party fight between DMK and AIDMK, the BJP could not have timed their move more precisely to pep up their cadre. It is being reported that the newly appointed Tamil Nadu BJP president Tamilisai Soundararajan had to meet and greet at least 7,000 workers who landed at the headquarters after the rumour spread like wild fire. Right now, Rajinikanth is shooting for Linga, which is said to deal with the issue of water disputes and the BJP is seeing this as a win-win situation for both the parties as Rajini and his family are in deep financial crisis after the disastrous performance of Kochadaiiyan. The motion-capture film directed by his daughter has been the biggest financial failure in Rajini’s career and BJP’s interest in him couldn’t have been more perfectly timed. In the past, when Atal Behari Vajpayee emphasized the need for national interlinking of rivers, Rajini had donated Rs 1 crore for the cause, and many in political circles are well-aware of this. However, Soundararajan maintains she hasn’t heard anything officially as yet. Meanwhile, political commentator Gnani Sankaran says that it has become a common practice for such rumours to be spread during the making of Rajini’s films. “It will create hype around the film and it will energise his fans to come and look for any politically loaded statement in the film,” he says. While he is sure that Rajini will not enter politics at this juncture, other political analysts feel that for cash-starved Rajinikanth and his family, the association is nothing short of a boon in disguise. However, they feel Rajini may not want to antagonize DMK or AIDMK by openly shifting his loyalties to BJP. On the other hand, like Pawan Kalyan who is said to have benefitted tremendously after his association with BJP during the recent general elections, Rajini may find this opportunity too lucrative to let go. On its part, BJP is not denying the rumours and is simply keeping silent. As for Soundararajan who will be meeting Shah on Thursday, she says she will wait till her leader brings up the topic as all she knows is the media version.
