From a distant 274th place last year, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has secured 19th place in the Swachh Bharat results which were announced by the Union government.
According to GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy, the GHMC took up various innovative schemes to improve its ranking in Swachh Bharat campaign. The Centre had taken up this scheme in 75 main important cities across the country. Of the total 2,000 marks, 1,000 had been allotted to the city and another 1,000 to the citizens.
Out of 2,000 marks, Hyderabad city got 1,355 primarily due to initiatives like Parichayam Karyakramam, prefabricated toilets, providing two dust bins to each household and introducing 2,000 auto-tippers for sanitation and solid waste management.
In the current year, the GHMC took several steps to tackle the issues like solid waste management and providing basic minimum facilities to citizens. The GHMC commissioner hoped that the city would rank among top-10 in the Swachh Bharat campaign next year.
