Genuine Gou Rakshaks Fulfil Important Role: RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat spoke in favour of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government during his annual Vijayadashami address at Reshimbagh Ground in Nagpur.

"I congratulate our government and our brave soldiers and all the wings of our armed forces who through an efficient and expert move have given a firm and befitting reply to this attack," Bhagwat said during his address. The RSS supremo was talking in reference to the surgical anti-terror strikes conducted along the Line of Control by the Indian Army.

Bhagwat also addressed the issue of cow slaughter and self-appointed "gou rakshaks." PM Modi had spoken about the same issue in August. Modi had spoken about these so-called protectors of cows, who end up being the attackers. "I feel so angry at times. Some people who are engaged in anti-social activities wear the mask of gou rakshaks," Modi had said.

Speaking about the issue, Bhagwat said that there are genuine cow vigilantes and their role in India is very important. "Cow vigilantes perform an important role and it's important to distinguish between those who protect the cow and others who are self-appointed," said the head of BJP's ideological mentor.

Critics of the BJP and RSS have said that the self-declared gou rakshaks are the reason behind increased tensions between religions and casts in various parts of the country, especially Modi's Gujarat. In July four Dalit men were stripped, tied up and thrashed by a gang of men who accused them of killing a cow.
