Ensure water to standing crop: Yanamala

Stating that efforts were on to ensure sufficient water to the standing crop of paddy during the current rabi season, Finance Minister Yanamala Ramakrishnudu on Sunday asked the officials of the Irrigation Department to chalk out a plan of action to save the standing crop and prepare estimates with regard to the requirement and availability of water resources in the district.

“The government is not going to compromise on providing irrigation to the entire ayacut during the rabi. The farmers need not worry about the standing crop, as we are planning to divert water from other sources such as rivulets in the neighbouring districts to save the crop,” he said, while addressing a review meeting with the officials of the irrigation and industry departments. The Minister said that the government would foot the oil bills in the event of farmers lifting water from water bodies by using motors to protect the crop from withering.

Special cell: He asked the officials to take steps for protecting the crop in the 12,500 acres of ayacut under the Pithapuram Branch Canal and another 12,000 acres under the Pampa reservoir. “There is a need to open a special cell in the office of the Superintending Engineer of the Irrigation Department, so that the farmers could interact with the officials directly and bring their problems to the notice of the government,” he said.

Irrigation SE S. Sugunakara Rao said that at present there was a shortage of 7 TMC of water in the Godavari for the rabi crop and steps were under way to protect the standing crop and to ensure drinking water supply to the upland areas during the summer season. Zilla Parishad chairman Namana Rambabu, MLC Boddu Bhaskara Rama Rao, Rajanagaram MLA Pendurthi Venkatesh and others were present.
