Mamata urges Centre to authorise DM to give citizenship rights

In a move that is set to raise some eyebrows, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said that she would urge the Centre to give citizenship rights to all Bangladeshis living in the state of West Bengal for 5 years or more.

A move like this will impact assembly poll results as 10 districts share borders with the neighbouring country. The timing of this initiative is something to be taken into account as giving citizenship to Bangladeshis has been an election plan for the BJP as well. In fact, after the general elections, with an eye on Assam, the BJP had categorically stated that process would be initiated to ensure that minorities who had migrated from Bangladesh under persecution and are living in India would be given citizenship rights.

Opposition are questioning Mamata Banerjee putting such pressure on the Centre, 90 days before the election with the question being raised as to what Mamata Banerjee stands to gain from this, with minorities constituting 27% of the electorate in West Bengal.

Mamata Banerjee is of course, aware of the impending prospect of the Congress and the CPM coming together as a brand alliance in West Bengal. Mamata Banerjee is arguing that if the migrants living in West Bengal are living there legally and have their government documents there shouldn't be any problem with giving them citizenship rights.
