Anand Sharma attacked at JNU, student union blames ABVP

Former union minister Anand Sharma was on Saturday attacked by some unknown persons during his visit to the JNU campus where the students have been protesting against the arrest of their leader Kanhaiya Kumar. “A couple of blows had landed from behind. I was hit near the ear. I realised much later that I was bleeding," Sharma said.

“It was dark, there was less visibility. I was in a state of shock," the Congress leader, who had gone to meet the protesting students, said, adding that the injuries are not serious.

The BJP has condemned the attack and said that whoever is responsible will face the brute force of the law. Reacting to the incident, BJP spokesman Nalin Kholi said: “Anand Sharma is a senior leader of the Congress. This incident is highly condemnable, its unacceptable, police will look at it, there is no question about it."

Meanwhile, some media reports have speculated that the attack may have been carried out by ABVP goons. JNU has witnessed intense student protests over the past few days following the alleged incident of anti-India sloganeering during a campus event. Police have arrested their leader Kanhaiya Kumar on sedation charges after he allegedly found involved in the anti-India protests a few days ago. The Congress and the CPI have criticised the strong police action and said that the ruling government is “trying to suppress the secular voice of the students".
