Former MP Vundavalli Arun Kumar has asked Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to fight for Special Category Status to the State without fear of any case like note-for-vote or the one against his party MP in the Union Cabinet.
Addressing the media here on Wednesday, Mr. Arun Kumar said that the tone and tenor of Mr. Naidu changed, particularly after his telephonic conversation with Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. Mr. Arun Kumar said that people should know what transpired between the two leaders. Mr. Arun Kumar said that the Chief Minister should keep in mind that the Centre was not even willing to reimburse the revenue deficit of Rs. 13,775 crore despite getting a revenue of Rs.33, 786 crore as taxes from the State.
“The Centre is giving only 67 paise per Re.1, which amounts to Rs.22, 633 crore, to Andhra Pradesh. States such as Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have been getting 80 paisa and 130 paisa respectively per every rupee paid,” he said. “In the A.P. Reorganization Act, it is clearly mentioned that the Centre has to reimburse the deficit for 10 years and take up Polavaram as a national project. But one of the Union Ministers said in Parliament that the project works have been kept in abeyance,” Mr. Arun Kumar added.
Referring to the breach to Polavaram canal, he said that it was the second such instance with the first one reported in October last. “Canals constructed during Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's tenure are intact,” he said, and wondered who was corrupt.
