Half-Yearly Report of Tollywood: Jan-June 2014

2014 has begun on bright note for Tollywood with a lot of hopes. In the past six months, 143 films have been released so far. Out of them 94 are straight films while 49 are dubbed films. Unlike last year which saw the release of 133 films in the first half (Jan 2013 to June 2013), including 85 straight films and 48 dubbed films, 2014 appears going great.

Considering the number of releases too, 2014 sounds great. But if you keep track of the business of the films, that's not the case. Only a handful of films have fared well at the ticket windows while most of them had a disappointing run. Balakrishna-starrer Legend and Allu Arjun's Race Gurram set cash registers ringing at Box Office and stood apart by joining Rs 50 Crore club (Collections + Satellite rights+ Remake rights). Ram Charan-Allu Arjun's Yevadu pocketed over Rs 40 Crore and joined the list. Akkineni's multi-starrer Manam too joined the hit bandwagon by garnering approximately Rs 30 Crore. Vishnu Manchu-starrer and Ram Gopal Varma directorial Rowdy which was made on shoe-string budget raked in moolah. Sundeep Kishan's Venkatadri Express, Allu Sirish-starrer Kotha Janta,

The films who tumbled at Box Office include Mahesh Babu's One-Nenokkadine, Nani's Aaha Kalyanam, and Paisa, Suneel's Bheemavaram Bullodu, Allari Naresh's Laddu Babu, Jump Jalani, Gunnam Ganagaraju's Amrutham...Chandamama Lo, Praveen Sattaru's Chandamama Kathalu and Prakash Raj's Ulavacharu . Except Traffic and Raja Rani, all other dubbed films tanked without a trace. Among recently released films Oohalu Gusagusalade is faring well at multi-plexes whereas Naga Chaitanya-Samantha's Autonagar Surya is getting poor response.

Post June 2, Telugu film industry is spread across two states - Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Uncertainty is descended over filmdom as there is no clarity on taxes to be levied by new governments of Telangana, AP.
