Vijayalakshmi Vadlapati, known popularly as Silk Smitha, entered the industry as an extra actress and first got noticed for her role as ‘Silk’ in the 1979 Tamil film Vandichakkaram. She became the most sought-after erotic actress in the early 1980s. In a career spanning 17 years, she appeared in over 450 films in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi languages. On 23 September 1996, she was found dead in her apartment in Chennai, apparently having committed suicide.
Popular actress and item songs specialist Anuradha shared few unknown facts abut her friend Silk Smitha and why couldn't she save her life. Anuradha said, “Many think, Silk Smitha was short tempered. But, she had mindset of kids. Sometimes she used to worry saying ‘everybody of our friends got settled in life by marrying. But, my life is going futile’. Silk was an introvert. She wouldn't share anything with friends. Silk’s life was totally diverse to what we had seen.
Just a day before she had committed suicide, Silk called me to meet her. But, I couldn't go as I was busy with family works. If I had gone to visit her on the day, she would have spoken out about her problems. Silk may have changed her mindset on ending her life.”
