Tollywood actresses are making a big splash on national TV or so it seems, going by the recent spree of TV commercials of big brands. In the past few months, we have had actresses like Shruti Haasan, Rakul Preet Singh, Raashi Khanna and Pooja Hegde share screen space with some of Bollywood's top actors like Ranbir Kapoor and Farhan Akthar. The latest celebrity to join this ever-growing list is Priya Anand, who has acted in films like Ko Ante Koti and Leader. And for all these lovely ladies, acting in commercials with big stars has proved to be a stepping stone to something bigger — pan India visibility, fame and some lucrative offers.
Whether it's Shruti grooving with Ranbir Kapoor or Rakul Preet flirting with Pulkit Samrat on the phone, these commercials seem to have opened a lot of doors for our actresses, at least in Bollywood. One such success story is that of former Miss India contestant-turnedactress, Pooja Hegde. "After working alongside Ranbir Kapoor in three TVCs, I was spotted by Ashutosh Gowariker's wife, Sunita. Ashutosh then cast me in Mohenjodaro opposite Hrithik Roshan!" says an excited Pooja. The actress credits her success to working with Ranbir in those TVCs. "The best part about Ranbir is that he puts you at ease. I am still a newbie in the industry and working with Ranbir gave me a lot of insight into how to be spontaneous as an actor. Even for a 60 seconds commercial, he puts his heart and soul in to it and more than that, he's quite a fun person in real life. There's so much to learn from him."
Raashi Khanna confesses that she got a call to audition for the crticially acclaimed Madras Cafe opposite John Abraham after she was spotted in an ad with Amit Sadh (of Kai Po Che fame). "I had a lot of people telling me that they couldn't take their eyes off me in the commercial. They said I expressed a lot without dialogues," says Raashi, who later worked with Farhan Akthar in another commercial. Rakul too created quite a flurry with an ad with Pulkit Samrat. "After my ad went viral, there was a sudden spurt of people enquiring about me and I never thought it would get me so much recognition," says Rakul.
Priya Anand too seems to be sailing in the same boat. The actress' new commercial with Farhan Akthar is being talkedabout quite a lot. "After acting in Fukrey, this is the first time I'm working with Farhan." Explaining why sharing screen space with big Bolly stars in TVC are working wonders for South actresses, Priya says, "At the end, you never know what'll work for you in the industry. Sometimes, it takes a knock-out performance in a film, a song or even a 30 seconds ad on air.You just keep your options open and believe in your instincts."
