FTII row: Gajendra Chauhan welcomes students' decision to end strike

Actor and BJP member Gajendra Chauhan, whose appointment as Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) Chairman, lead to a massive protest, on Wednesday welcomed the students' move to call of the strike. He also invited the students to come for talks and assured them to work towards the betterment of the institute.

"I welcome the students' move to end the strike and resume classes. I have appealed to the students several times since the strike began on June 12. I again appeal to them that we can sit and resolve any standing issue," said Gajendra Chauhan. Answering to question about the former FTII students threatening to return their national awards as protest against him, Chauhan appealed them not to take any decision in haste. "Returning awards is not a welcome and good move. I would appeal to them (students) not to take any such step which they have to repent in future," said Chauhan. The 140-day-old strike by the students of the Film and Television Institute of India to protest the appointment of Chauhan as its chairman ended on Wednesday.

"We will go back to our classes, but the protest will continue in a democratic manner," a representative of the students told reporters.

The strike at India's premier film institute was called off after five rounds of talks between the agitating students and the government failed. The last meeting of the students took place on October 20, in which they had met Information and Broadcasting Minister RS Rathore.

Chauhan is best known only for his role as Yudhisthir in BR Chopra's TV series Mahabharat, aired on Doordarshan between 1988-90. He has done small roles in nondescript TV soaps and forgettable films. He has also been associated with the BJP for several years and had actively campaigned for the party during the 2014 Lok Sabha election
