You see them sport ensembles just off the rack. Or in most cases, their style statements are borrowed and passed off as 'original'. Never mind that. But most heroines in Tollywood today can't really stake their claim in the 'most fashionable list', unless they are trying to gain a foothold in Bollywood. Yes, while mana heroines look drab and dowdy promoting their Telugu films, they completely turn the heat on if they are part of Bollywood movie promotion, or even while making an appearance on national television.
Call it the fear of scrutiny of Bollywood's fashion police, but actresses take their dressing a lot more seriously while on the national stage. Take for example actress Ileana D'Cruz. Other than baring her midriff, much of Ileana's outfits while in Tollywood do not do justice to her and is nothing to write home about. But ever since the Goan beauty made her Bollywood debut in Barfi! in 2012, she has undergone a major style transformation.
Opting mostly for conventional and classic pieces, Ileana's style is classy and sophisticated. Known for styling herself for most public appearances, Ileana oozes confidence and doesn't take risks. In an interview to a film glossy, the actress addressed her style transformation, saying, "Fashion has become pretty demanding. It's difficult to keep up because trends change by the fortnight these days. That's precisely why I don't like taking risks and always opt for conventional and simple statements." And the move seems to have worked for Ileana.
Ditto for Tamannaah. Tollywood's Milky Beauty has done a fab job with her public appearances ever since her Hindi film debut, Himmatwala. And she keeps taking it up a notch with every Hindi film she does. Vintage style dresses, crop tops, palazzo pants, sari gowns, pant suits — Tamannaah has been on a roll! The actress also takes great care to post pictures of her look with all the details on her social networking pages. The drooling fans then get to work with their comments and feedback.
Another lady who seems to have found her spunk back is actress Shruti Haasan. The Haasan gal was all 'rocker chic', till Tollywood happened. And then she found her footing. Shruti is a shutterbug's delight and her sense of style is edgy and experimental. So much so, the diva walked the ramp as a show-stopper at the recently concluded fashion week in Mumbai.
Actress Taapsee too makes quite a fashionable appearance when in Bollywood as opposed to her Tollywood stints, where she usually keeps it 'simple' and 'cute'. Admitting to the rigours of being fashionable while promoting a Hindi film, Taapsee was quoted as saying, "There is pressure to look great all the time. One small misstep and you are written off. Moreover, actresses are given clear instructions to be careful because you are constantly under the glare of the national media. It's a different scenario in South, where people like you, regardless of what you wear."
And thanks to the increasing awareness, the ladies are bringing a bit of style and spunk to Tollywood as well. With Shruti, Ileana and Taapsee walking the ramp at the national fashion events, they seem to have won that fashionable stamp of approval.
